Abstract
Seventy (70) samples of each of hoof, muscles, intestine, liver and tongue of pigs were collected from different abattoirs in Umuahia, Abia State of Nigeria. The samples were Pre-enriched in Peptone water of pH 7.2 followed by subculture onto solid media, and incubated at 370C for 1 - 2 days. Suspected colonies were identified based on their morphological and biochemical characteristics. Out of a total of 16, hoof, muscles, intestine, Liver and Tongue samples, 12.50%, 50%, 25%, 37.5% and 50% were positive for Salmonella species respectively. Salmonella isolates from tongues and muscles were resistant to Nalidixic acid (30 ^g/disk), Augumentin (30 ^g/disk), and Tetracycline (30^g/disk).These observations are of Public Health Significance, and call for more research attention and public health Campaigns.
