Abstract
The effect of ultrafiltration and diafiltration of whey from kashkaval, and of reverse osmosis of the ultrafiltration permeate on several ecological indices, i.e. chemical oxygen demand (COD permanganate oxydability), chemical oxygen demand (COD bichromate oxydability), 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and undissolved substances was investigated. It was found that ultrafiltration and the combination of ultra- and diafiltration of whey did not lead to efficient environmentally friendly whey treatment in terms of decrease in the ecological indices below the limit standards. The ecological conformity of whey ultrafiltration and the subsequent reverse osmosis of the ultrafiltration permeate obtained expressed as decrease in the ecological indices below the limit standards was established.
