Congestion management of transmission lines in the market environment

ABSTRACT: When the energy exchanges along a transmission line exceed the capacity of the transmission line, the congestion phenomenon will be created. In recent years, by converting the traditional systems to competitive markets, loading patterns of transmission networks are very different from the purposes for which these networks have been designed. This has caused that during exchanging power between market participants, the transmission network will be easily congested which makes the task of monitoring and controlling transmission network more complicate congestion management is a tool that uses various methods and factors to solve congestion problem. In this paper, first the causes of congestion and the importance of congestion management are discussed; then, various methods of congestion management and their applications are investigated; and finally, a general conclusion is presented according to the stated contents.
