Clinical practice guidelines as a new source of middle-range theory: Focus on acute pain

Clinical practice guidelines are a useful source of middle-range prescriptive theory because of their empirical support and specific recommendations for practice. A method of developing nursing theory from the acute pain management guidelines is presented and illustrated with a theory of achieving a balance between analgesia and side effects in adults.
