Abstract
Inhibitions of bioluminescence in Photobacterium phosphoreum were determined for 20 fluorine-contained aromatics. A quantitative structure-activity relationship was developed by linear solvation energy relationship approach. Stepwise multiple linear regression shows the intrinsic molecular volume Vi/100 is not significant here. Hydrogen-bonding interaction is important in the toxic behavior of these compounds, since the presence of atom F greatly improves the hydrogen-bonding donor acidity. Non-reactive toxicity mechanism does not apply to some of the compounds included here.
