  • Abstract
This paper provides a review of the background, implementation and evaluation of the River Torrens Linear Park, Adelaide, SA. The Park is a 50 km long greenway, linking the Mt Lofty Ranges with Gulf St. Vincent, following the course of the River Torrens. The background includes historical, land ownership, biophysical, hydrological and attitudinal influences. Prompted by several strategic issues and changing attitudes, a development plan for the reinstatement of the river corridor was developed in the late 1970s, within prioritized planning objectives. Implementation on a sector-by-sector basis was carried out from 1982 to 1998. The Torrens Catchment Water Management Board (TCWMB) is carrying out further management work. The River Torrens Linear Park has served as a model for riverine parks elsewhere in Australia.
