Abstract
Based on research previously carried out on innovative forms of tenure within the ‘anticretico’ system of Bolivia (In: G. Payne (Ed.), Land, Rights and Innovation: Improving Tenure Security for the Urban Poor, ITDG Publishing, London, 2002), this paper looks at whether its popularity has increased or decreased and what are the causes and issues which have facilitated or obstructed this process, taking into account variations in the political and legal systems of the country. The paper also presents further categories of tenure and their impact on access to housing in formal and informal sectors. The levels of security and property rights associated with existing tenure categories are analysed, giving particular attention to gender variables.
