  • Abstract
Event-based mercury (Hg) precipitation samples were collected with a modified MIC-B sampler between September 2003 and April 2005 at Potsdam, NY to investigate Hg in wet deposition and identify potential source areas using the potential source contribution function (PCSF) and residence time weighted concentration (RTWC) models. The volume-weighted mean (VWM) concentration and wet deposition flux were and during the study period, and and in 2004, respectively, and show seasonal trends with larger values in the spring and summer. The PSCF model results matched known source areas based on an emission inventory better than did the RTWC results based on the spatial correlation index. Both modeling results identified large Hg source areas that contain a number of coal-fired power plants located in the Upper Ohio River Valley and in southeastern Michigan, as well as in Quebec and Ontario where there are metal production facilities, waste incinerators and paper mills. Emissions from the Atlantic Ocean were also determined to be a potential source.
