Rural sanitary domestic flushing toilet system

A rural sanitary domestic flushing toilet system (SDFTS), which consists of (1) a water-saving flushing toilet connected with a 2 m3 three-sectional septic tank (WTST), and (2) a shallow soil diffusion trench or pit (SSDT or SSDP), has been developed for treatment of sewage† in Shanghai rural areas. The WTST can produce primary treatment effluent which may be used as fertilizer for farm fields. For treatment of excessive effluent from the WTST it is necessary to connect it with a SSDT or SSDP. Possible contamination and improvement measures are discussed in detail.
