Descent theory of locally internal categories

We prove that, in a category with finite limits, known characterizations of descent and effective descent morphisms along a map p depend only on the adjointness of p and p° in a Span category. Therefore, they can be easily transferred to other situations, e.g. to locally internal categories and to existential hyperdoctrines.
