Abstract
An experimental investigation is conducted to
evaluate the thermo-mechanical constitutive behavior of a
functionally graded material (FGM) under dynamic loading.
Cylindrical specimens are machined from a titanium/
titanium mono-boride (Ti/TiB)-layered FGM plate using
electrical discharge machining (EDM). A Split Hopkinson
Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus with infrared (IR) spot
heaters is used to investigate the effect of temperature on
mechanical response of the FGM material. A series of
experiments are conducted at different temperatures and
the stress–strain relation for different temperatures is
obtained. The material showed high thermal softening at
elevated temperatures resulting in a large reduction in
compressive strength and an increase in failure strain.
