Abstract
New indicatorsoftechnologicalchangeintheUSbasedoninformationdrawnfromthe
catalogueoftheLibraryofCongressfortheperiod1909–1949aredevelopedandusedto
pinpointtherelationship,first,betweentechnicalchangeandeconomicactivity,and,
second,betweenfluctuationsininnovativeactivityandtheGreatDepression.Although
linksbetweentechnologicalchange,outputandproductivityarefound,resultssuggest
thattheslowdownintechnologicalprogressintheearly1930sdidnotcontribute
significantlytotheGreatDepression.Ontheotherhand,theremarkableaccelerationin
innovationsafter1934didplayaroleintherecovery
