Abstract
Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics has lagged behind equilibrium statistical mechanics in the acquisition of a solid quantitative theoretical framework. Rapid progress is however taking place now, making use of the chaotic nature of microscopic dynamics. A new idealization of nonequilibrium systems has been introduced, which describes natural steady states by SRB measures. This leads to testable predictions, which we shall discuss.
