Abstract
Numerical simulation of high-speed machining has proved to be particularly complex due to the diversity of the physical phenomena involved, including thermo-mechanical coupling, contact/friction and material failure. The present work focuses on the simulation of machining processes involving material failure due to adiabatic strain localization and addresses important issues such as adaptive mesh refinement and material failure. Solution is achieved using a dynamic explicit time integration scheme in conjunction with a combined finite/discrete element algorithm.
