Abstract
TheIE-SASWmethod,acombinationofimpact-echo(IE)acousticswithspectralanalysisofsurfacewaves(SASW),isproposedasanewlydevelopednondestructivetestingmethodinconcretestructures.ThisfeasibilitystudyexaminestheIEtechniqueanduseselasticP-wavevelocitydataasmeasuredfromtheSASWmethodonconcretemembersinnuclearpowerplantcontainmentstructures.Itwasshownthatboththethicknessoftheconcretespecimensusedinthisstudyandthedepthoftheintroduceddefects(i.e.voids)couldbeidentifiedbytheIE-SASWmethod.Incontrast,thereinforcedsteelbaritselfcouldnotbeidentifiedbytheIE-SASWmethod.Additionally,GPR(groundpenetratingradar)techniqueswereusedtoexaminethesamespecimensinordertoestablishsomelevelofperformanceandreliabilitytocomparewiththeperformanceoftheIE-SASWmethod.TheGPRmethodprovidesanobjectiveandreliableimagecorrespondingtothereinforcedsteelbars.TheexperimentalstudiesshowthatitismorefeasibletousetheIE-SASWmethodratherthanGPRtodetectvoidsthatwerepositionedbeneaththesteelreinforcingbarsintheconcretespecimens.
