  • Abstract
    Thispaperreviewsthecurrentstateofadvancedfuelresearchanddevelopmentandconsidersadvancedfueldevelopmentworkinthecontextofthetechnicalandeconomicdrivers.Thescopeencompassesevolutionarydevelopmentforexistinglightwaterreactors(LWRs),radicaldevelopmentsforLWRs,mostofwhicharefocusedonmoreefficientplutoniumconsumptionandonlongertermdevelopmentsinrelationtothermalandfastreactorfuels.Thereviewconcludesthatthereisagapbetweennear-termresearchanddevelopmenttosupportutilitiesandthelong-termworkthatfocusesongoalssuchasimprovedplutoniumutilisation,wastereduction,improvedproliferationresistanceandstrategicindependence.
