Abstract
Theproblemofmodellingahighlyabsorbingregioninadiffusioncalculationiswellknownandmanymethodshavebeendevelopedtoaccommodatethetransporteffectsindiffusiontheory.Inthisworktheuseoftheequivalentcross-sectionsmethodforpebblebedtypereactorsisevaluatedbyapplyingittocalculationsofcontrolrod(CR)experimentsperformedattheASTRACriticalFacilityattheRussianResearchCentre,KurchatovInstituteinMoscow.ThemeasuredreactivityworthsoftheCRssituatedinthesidereflectorarecomparedwiththecalculatedvaluesmakinguseofequivalentdiffusionparametersinVSOP.ResultsobtainedwerefavourableforCRssituatedwithinthefirstringofreflectorblocks,withlargererrorsobtainedforCRssituatedfurtherfromthecore.Anadditionalmethodthatwasinvestigatedistheuseofequivalentboronconcentrations(EBCs)torepresenttheabsorberregion.ThisisshowntobeusefulifappliedcorrectlyandwithcareespeciallyinthecaseofdifferentialCRworth.Practicaldifficultiesexistwithbothapproaches,whichmakestheinvestigationofanalternativemethod,whichshouldremovetheseshortcomings,attractive.
