    Oneofthekeyissuesinin-serviceinspectionqualificationistherepresentativenessofthedefectsusedinqualificationspecimens.Thebestrepresentativenessisachievedwithrealisticdefects.However,presentspecimenproductiontechniqueshavesomesignificantweaknesses,suchasunrealisticdefectsoradditionalalterationsinducedinthesurroundingmaterial.Specimensmanufactured,forexample,byweldimplantationorwithweldsolidificationdefectsalwaysresultinoneormoreextraweldinterfaces.TheseinterfacescanbedetectedbyNDT.Toovercomeproblemswiththecurrentspecimens,anewdefectmanufacturingtechniquewasdeveloped.Thenewtechniqueproducesnatural,representativedefectswithoutintroducingadditionalweldmetalorotherunwantedalterationstothespecimen. Thenewmethodenablesartificialproductionofsingle,separatefatiguecracksbythermalloading.Themethodisbasedonanaturalthermalfatiguedamagemechanismandenablesproductionofrealcracksdirectlyintothesamples.Cracksareproducedwithoutweldingormachiningandwithoutanypreliminarysurfacetreatmentorartificialinitiatorsuchasanotchoraprecrack.Singlecrackoranetworkofcrackscanbeinducedintothebasematerial,weldedareas,HAZ,weldcladdings,threadedareas,T-joints,etc.Thelocation,orientationandsizeofproducedcrackscanbeaccuratelycontrolled.Producedcrackscanbeusedtosimulatedifferenttypesofservice-inducedcrackssuchasthermalfatigue,mechanicalfatigueandstresscorrosioncracks.Itisshownthatartificiallyproducedthermalfatiguecrackscorrespondwellwiththereal,service-inducedcracksandovercometheproblemsoftraditionalqualificationspecimenmanufacturingtechniques.
