  • Abstract
    Anextensiveexperimentalstudyofthemechanicalpropertiesandfracturepropertiesofheavyconcreteusedmostlyintheconstructionofradiationshieldingstructuresispresented.ThemixturesconsideredhereinaredevelopedaccordingtotheoneadaptedintheKuoshengnuclearpowerplantinTaiwan;testsofthebasicmechanicalcharacteristicspropertiesconformtotheASTMandthefracturepropertiesaredeterminedbythemethodproposedbyKarihalooandNallathambi[RILEMReport5,FractureMechanicsTestMethodsforConcrete(1991)1].Acrackanalysisusingpre-crackedspecimensandadyetechniquewasalsoconductedtoexaminethecrackfrontsandthecorrespondingresidualstrengthsofheavyconcrete.Testresultsindicatedthattheelasticmodulusofheavyconcreteishigherthanthatofregularmortarandincreasewithironorecontent.Thecompressivestrengthofheavyconcretealsoincreaseswithironorecontent,whilethetensilestrengthdeclines.Theconcreteincluding40%metallicaggregatecontentbyvolumeperformshighercompressivestrengthandfracturetoughnessinthisstudy.
