  • Abstract
    ThebehaviourofaspecialisolatingsystemfortheNuclearIslandofanADSPlantishereanalysed,withapreliminaryassessmentofbaseisolationmaineffectsonthebuildingresponsetoatypicalearthquakeexcitation. Afterageneraldescriptionofisolatorsandmainprinciplesofseismicisolation,theattentionisfocusedupontheHDRBisolatoranditsmajorapplicationstodate. TheapplicationtotheADSPlantisinvestigatedthroughaniterativeapproachcombiningtheresultsfromathree-dimensionalfiniteelementmodelandsimplifiedby-handcalculationstakingintoaccountthetypicalnon-linearcharacteristicsofconsideredisolators. TheanalysisresultsallowacomparisonbetweentheNIbuildingseismicresponseforabasematonclassicalfoundationsandfortwodifferenttypesofisolators.Thecomparisonisfocusedontheaccelerationfloorresponsespectraevaluatedatthereactorsupportlevel,abasicconcerninthemainvesselseismicdesign. Givenresultshighlightthedrasticreductionofconsideredflooraccelerationsasthebaseisolationmajoreffect. Thecriteriapresentlyrecommendedforthestabilityofisolatedbuildingsarealsoverified.
