Abstract
Theresearchpresentedinthispaperaddressessomeimportantprobabilisticfracturemechanicsissuesraisedinrecenteffortsforassessingpressurizedthermalshockrisk(PTS)inpressurizedwaterreactors(PWRs).Thecommonobjectivesaddressingtheseissueswereto(1)provideaframeworkincludinguncertaintycharacterizationandtreatmentforPTSstudies;(2)usethescreeningcriteriaforscenarioselectiondevelopedandreportedbytheauthors;(3)developasimplecomputationapproachforPTSanalyses;and(4)supportotherresearchersintheireffortstodeveloptoolsandtechniquesforreactorvesselfailureassessment.
ThePTSevaluationconsistsofthreedisciplines:probabilisticriskassessment,thermalhydraulics,andprobabilisticfracturemechanics.Themajorcontributionofthisresearchhasbeentoprovideaframeworkforthefracturemechanicsaspectsofpressurizedthermalshockanalysisincludinguncertaintycharacterizationandtreatment.Theuncertaintyanalysisproposedinthisresearchmakesadistinctionbetweenaleatoryandepistemicuncertaintiesforproperpropagationofuncertainties.
Toeasethecomputationalburdenincurredbyintroducingthermalhydraulicsuncertainties,asimpleandreasonablyaccuratefracturemechanicscomputationalapproachthatperformsfracturemechanicscalculationsrapidlyandconservativelyisproposed.TheapproachistestedbydevelopingamathematicalroutineinformofasimpleMathematica™routinecalledMATH-PFM.
