  • Abstract
    Measurementsofpressuredropforasteamandwaterflowinsideseveralheatedtubeswereobtainedattwodifferentlaboratories(ChalkRiverLaboratoriesandÉcolePolytechnique).ThetestsectionsusedtocarryouttheexperimentswereconstructedwithInconel-600tubes,andwerecooledinternallywithanupwardflowofwater.Areductioninfrictionalpressuregradientwithanincreaseinheatfluxwasobservedforsingle-phaseflowsatthesamecross-sectional-averageconditions.Afterboilingwasinitiated,thetwo-phasefrictionmultiplierincreasedwithincreasingheatfluxinthebubbly-flowregion,butdecreasedintheannular-flowregion.Astheheatedsurfaceapproacheddryout,thetwo-phasefrictionmultiplierexhibitedamaximumvalueanddecreasedwithincreasingthermodynamicquality,untildryoutoccurred.Thedecreasingtrendwasattributedtoareductionintheliquid-filmthicknessandtheterminationofliquidentrainment.Followingtheoccurrenceofcriticalheatflux,asignificantdropinfrictionalpressuregradientwasnoted,causedbythechangeinthenear-wallsublayertoalow-viscosityvaporblanket.
