Abstract
ThispapersummarizesthecumulativeworkundertakenintheframeoftheEUshared-costaction“ASTARProject”—thecurrentstatusandfutureperspectivesinthefieldofadvancednumericalsimulationofthree-dimensionaltwo-phaseflowprocesses.This3-yearrunningproject,whichstartedinSeptember2000,involvessevenpartnerinstitutesfromaroundEurope.Specificemphasisisgiventothefurtherdevelopmentofcharacteristic-basedupwinddifferencing(alsocalled“hyperbolic”)numericalmethodsandtheirapplicationtotransienttwo-phaseflow.Thepapersummarizesthecommonbasisadoptedforthephysicalandmathematicalmodellingoftwo-phaseflowintheformofasingle-pressure“two-fluid”modelandthevariousnumericalsolutiontechniquesdevelopedbythepartners.Severalbenchmarkexercisesarepresentedwhichhavebeenusedasverificationandassessmentproceduresforcomparingthedifferentmodellingandnumericalapproaches.Commentsonthesuitability,accuracy,numericalstability,algorithmicrobustnessandcomputationalefficiencyserveasindicatorsforthepossibleextensionofthesemethodstofuturecodedevelopmentactivities.TwofurthertasksoftheASTARprojectdealtwiththeproductionofhighqualityexperimentalfielddataintheLINXfacilityofPSI,forthevalidationofCFDmodelsfortwo-phasebubblyflow,andthecouplingofatwo-phaseCFDmodulewithasystemcode.Detailsofthesetaskshavebeenpublishedseparately,andwillnotberecalledinthispaper.
