Abstract
Thesafetyissuesofliquidmetalfastbreederreactors(LMFBR)arecrucialduetothefactthatahighlyreactiveandhazardousfluidlikeliquidsodiumisusedascoolant.Oneoftheextremecases,whichcanoccurinafuelsubassemblyofanLMFBR,isatotalblockageofliquidinsidethesubassembly,whichmayleadtoboilingofsodium.Thepresentstudyaddressesthisproblembyconductingexperimentsona19-rodbundleassemblyenclosedinsideatallhexagonalenclosure.Liquidsodiumisusedastheheattransferfluid.Thenaturalconvectionmodeofheattransferisthemainfocusofinvestigationwithaco-flowingairthroughanannularpackedbedtosimulatetheneighbouringsubassemblies.Themaximumtemperatureachievedunderdifferentratesofpowergenerationsandairflowconditionsareobserved.Alsotheradialtemperaturedistributionsatdifferentplanesunderdifferentoperatingconditionsofpowerandairflowrateshavebeenobserved.TheresultsareofsignificantimportanceforvalidatinganalysisforthepurposeofpredictionofboilingincipienceinanLMFBRsubassemblyundertotallyblockedcondition.
