    Theseverefueldamage(SFD)researchatForschungszentrumKarlsruhestartedwiththesinglerodexperiments[Hagen,S.,Malauschek,H.,Peck,S.O.,Wallenfels,K.P.,1983.TemperatureEscalationinPWRFuelRodSimulatorBundlesduetotheZircaloy/steamReactionTestESBU-1.TestResultsReport,FZK-3508]alreadybeforetheTMI-2accidentrevealedthattheknowledgeonaccidentinitiationandprogressionwasscarce.Thegeneralfocusonprimarycircuitresearchwastheunderstandingoftherelevantprocessesandtheirinteractions,andofpossibilitiesforcountermeasures.However,eventoday,themostprominentcountermeasure,thefloodingofadegradedcore,isnotyetcompletelyunderstood,namelytheinfluenceofadverseeffectssuchasenhancedcoredegradationandhydrogenspikesunderthemostprobablescenarios.
