Abstract
Bursttestsusingwall-thinnedpipeofcarbonsteelforhigh-temperatureusewereconductedinordertoexaminetheinfluenceoflengthofwall-thinningonburstpressure.Then,three-dimensionalelastic-plasticlargedeformationfiniteelementanalyses(EP-FEA)wereperformedtoaccuratelypredicttheburstpressureobtainedbythetests.Thefailurepressurecorrespondingtotheburstpressureintestswasdefinedasthemaximumpressureduringtheanalysisincludingtheinstabilityconditionafterthepeakofpressure.TheresultsshowedthatthefailurepressureobtainedbyEP-FEAagreedwellwiththeexperimentalresults.Finally,failurepressuresofwall-thinnedpipeswithvarioussizes,thicknesses,flawlengthsanddepthswereexaminedbyEP-FEAwiththesameprocedureofanalysisasvalidatedinthispaper.Theresultsshowedthat,fromthestandpointofinfluenceofflawlengthonfailurepressure,itispreferabletonormalizeflawlengthbypipemeanradiusoftheunflawedsectionRratherthanbyshellparameter(Rt)0.5,wheretisthethicknessoftheunflawedsection.
