Abstract
Aspallationtargetsystemisakeycomponenttobedevelopedforanacceleratordrivensystem(ADS).Itisknownthata15–25MWspallationtargetisrequiredforapractical1000MWthADS.Thedesignofa20MWspallationtargetisverychallengingbecausemorethan60%ofthebeampowerisdepositedasheatinasmallvolumeofthetargetsystem.Inthepresentwork,anumericaldesignstudywasperformedtoobtaintheoptimaldesignparametersfora20MWspallationtargetfora1000MWthADS.Adualinjectiontubewasproposedforareductionofthelead–bismutheutectic(LBE)flowrateatthetargetchannel.Theresultsofthepresentstudyshowthata30cmwideprotonbeamwithauniformbeamdistributionshouldbeadoptedforaspallationtargetofa20MWpower.WhenthedualLBEinjectiontubeisemployed,theLBEflowratecouldbereducedbyafactorof7withoutreducingtheallowablebeamcurrent.
