Abstract
Thecriticalheatflux(CHF)isoneoftheimportantphenomenalimitingthemaximumrateofheattransferandhencepowerratingofnuclearreactors.Thethermalhydraulicphenomenalikepressuredrop,heattransfer,stability,etc.dependsupontheflowpatterninthesystem.TheCHFphenomenonisalsocloselyrelatedtothetwo-phaseflowpatterns.ItisimportanttoinvestigatethedependenceofCHFontheflowpatternregimestounderstandtheunderlyingmechanisms.ThepresentinvestigationrevealsthatCHFgenerallyincreaseswithmassfluxinthechurn/slugregion.However,intheannularregiontheCHFdecreaseswithincreaseinmassflux.ConsideringthedependencyoftheCHFtrendontheflowpatternregime,itwillbeusefultodevelopCHFmodels,whicharespecifictotheflowpatternregime.ThedataofCHFlook-uptablehasbeenconsideredinthisinvestigationsincethisapproachisoneofthemostreliablemethodsforthepredictionofCHFandisbeingusedinseveralbest-estimatethermal-hydraulicsystemcodes,suchasRELAP5,CATHAREandCATHENA.Thepressure,massfluxandqualityhavebeenconsideredasimportantthermalhydraulicparameterstocharacterizetheflowpatternduringCHFundervariousoperatingcondition.
