Abstract
Rapidpressurizationtestwascarriedouttoevaluatethemechanicalbehaviorofthezirconiumcladdingunderafaststrainrateaswellasabiaxialstressstateforsimulatinganout-of-pilereactivityinitiatedaccident(RIA)behavior.Influenceoftemperature,hydrogencontentandalloyingelementshavebeenaddressedintheconductedmechanicaltests.Theresultsshowedthatpressurizationratesof5.4GPa/satroomtemperatureand3.1GPa/sat350°Cwereachieved.ThecorrespondingtimetofailurewassimilartoexpectedpowertransientdurationduringaRIA.MaximumhoopstressofZircaloy-4atroomtemperatureand350°Cincreased,respectivelyby24.3and16.8%whencomparedtotheconventionalbursttestresults.Failuremodeswitchedfromaductileballooningtoabrittlefailurewhichleadstoanaxialsplitofthecladdingwhenthehydrogenwasaddedatanominalvalueof600ppm.Whenthetesttemperatureincreased,itseffectwasdiminished.Additionofanalloyingelementinfluencedthemechanicalpropertydifferently.Niobiumactedbeneficiallyagainsthydrogenembrittlementinthatitincreasedtheductilityofthemetalmatrix.
