  • Abstract
    Flowacceleratedcorrosion(FAC)wearisaseriousdegradationproblemespeciallyfornuclearpowerplantssinceitmayresultintheplantdamageaswellasrisktopersonnel.Inthispaper,amethodologywhichincludesthetwo-phasehydrodynamicCFDmodelsandFACmodels,isproposedtopredictsevereFACwearsites.Basedonhydrodynamicsimulationresults,thepresentCFDmodelscanpreciselycapturethetwo-phasecharacteristicswithinthepipingsystem,whichincludethecentrifugaleffect,thegravitationeffectandtheimbalanceofphaseandmassseparationinaT-junction,etc.Coupledwiththeseflowcharacteristics,theappropriateFACindicatorscanpredictthepossiblelocationsofsevereFACwear.Thismethodologywasvalidatedagainstthemeasuredresultsofwearsitedistributionsforthepipingsysteminaboilingwaterreactor(BWR)powerplant.GoodagreementbetweenmeasurementsandpredictionsatseverewearsitesindicatethatthepresentmodelscancapturethecharacteristicsofsevereFACwearandcanhelpassistinthepipewall-monitoringprogramforanuclearpowerplant.
