Abstract
Thispaperdescribestheapplicationof“hightemperaturestructuralintegrityassessmentprocedures”developedintheUKandJapantocreep-fatiguecrackinitiationinweldedType316featurestests.Thecomponentsweresubjectedtobothfatigueandcreep-fatigueloadingat630°C.Theloadingsarerepresentativeofthoseontheuppersealgimbaljointinanadvancedgascooledreactor(AGR),exceptthatthetestswereisothermalandtheimposeddwelltimeswerereduced.Itisdemonstratedthatapplicationoftheproceduresgivesaccuratepredictionsoftheobservedcrackinitiationintheweldment,basedontwodifferentadvancedinelasticconstitutivemodels(BEandCRIEPImodels)andbestestimatematerialsdata.Applicationofsimplifiedassessmentmethodsbasedonelasticanalysisisshowntobeconservative.Whereappropriate,contrastsbetweentheUKandtheJapaneseassessmentproceduresandinelasticmodellingtechniqueshavebeenhighlighted.
