Abstract
Manylooselysupportedcomponentsaresubjectedtoflow-inducedvibrationleadingtolocalizedwear.Lifepredictiondependsonrobustandaccuratemodellingofthenonlineardynamicsasthecomponentsinteractwiththeirsupports.Theoutputofsuchanalysisisthecomponentdynamicresponseandimpactforces,includingfrictionforcesduringstick–slipmotions.Suchresultsareusedtodeterminethenormalworkrates,whichareutilizedtopredictfrettingweardamage.Accurateestimatesoftheseparametersareessential.Thispaperpresentssimulationsofalooselysupportedfuel-channeltubesubjecttoturbulenceexcitation.Theeffectsoftube/supportclearanceandpreloadareinvestigated.Severalfrictionmodels,includingvelocity-limited,spring-damperandforce-balanceareutilized.Acomparisonofthesemodelsiscarriedouttoinvestigatetheiraccuracy.Theresultsshowgoodagreementwithexperimentalworkrateswhenasimpleiterativeproceduretoupdatethefrictionforcesisused.
