Abstract
ThispaperaddressesthesafetyassessmentofthelithiumtargetoftheInternationalFusionMaterialsIrradiationFacility(IFMIF)throughevaluatingthemostimportantriskfactorsrelatedtosystemoperationandverifyingthefulfillmentofthesafetycriteria.Thehazardassessmentisbasedonusingawell-structuredFailureModeandEffectAnalysis(FMEA)procedurebydetailingonacomponent-by-componentbasisallthepossiblefailuremodesandidentifyingtheireffectsontheplant.Additionally,asystemsanalysis,applyingthefaulttreetechnique,isperformedinordertoevaluate,fromaprobabilisticstandpoint,alltherelevantandpossiblefailuresofeachcomponentrequiredforsafesystemoperationandassessingtheunavailabilityofthelithiumtargetsystem.Thelasttaskincludesthethermal–hydraulictransientanalysisofthetargetlithiumloop,includingoperationalandaccidenttransients.Alithiumtargetloopmodelisdeveloped,usingtheRELAP5/Mod3.2thermal–hydrauliccode,whichhasbeenmodifiedtoincludespecificfeaturesofIFMIFitself.Themainconclusionsarethattargetsafetyisfulfilled,thehazardsassociatedwithlithiumoperationareconfinedwithintheIFMIFsecurityboundaries,theenvironmentalimpactisnegligible,andtheplantrespondstothesimulatedtransientsbybeingabletoreachsteadyconditionsinasafetysituation.
