    BhabhaAtomicResearchCentre(BARC),Mumbai,isembarkingonabroadbasedprogramforthoriumutilizationinpowerproductiontoachieveall-roundcapabilityintheentirethoriumcycle.Asastepinthisdirection,alowpowerCriticalFacilityisunderconstructionatBARC.ThefacilitywillgreatlycontributetotheunderstandingandvalidationofthecalculationalmodelsandnucleardatausedinthedesignofthoriumbasedAdvancedHeavyWaterReactor.Thefacilityisalsodesignedtocatertotheexperimentalrequirementsoffuturelatticestudiesrelatedto500MWepressurizedheavywaterreactors.Thispapercoversthebasicdesignfeatures,safetyaspectsandtheplannedexperimentalprogramofthenewfacility.
