  • Abstract
    TarapurAtomicPowerStation(TAPS),atwin-unitBWRstationistheoldestNPPinIndia.Theseunitsareoperatingforthelast30yearswithimpressiveoperationperformanceindicatorsandinthisperiodtheiroperatinglicensewasperiodicallyextendedbytheAtomicEnergyRegulatoryBoard.Certainmodificationsandimprovementshavebeenmadeintheseunitsbasedonoperatingexperiencesandtofurtherimprovethesafetystandards.Testingofsurveillancesamplesofthereactorvesselmaterialconfirmedthatthevesselcouldoperatewellbeyond60EffectiveFullPowerYears(EFPYs),whereastill2003,theseunitshavecompleted18EFPYs.Inordertoextendtheoperatinglicenseoftheseunitsafreshcomprehensivereviewinvolvingreviewofplantoperatingperformance,ageingmanagementanddesignbasisandsafetyanalysiswascarriedout.Theseunitswerereviewedagainstthecurrentsafetypracticesandbasedonthisreviewsomerecommendationsaremadetobringthesafetylevelsofthesevintageunitsonparwiththerecentlyauthorizedplants.ThispapergivesageneraldescriptionanddescribestheoperatingexperienceofTAPS.Also,safetyreviewofTAPScarriedoutforlicenserenewaliscovered.
