  • Abstract
    Theinternationalfusionmaterialsirradiationfacility(IFMIF)isaimedtoprovideanintenseneutronsourcebyahighcurrentdeuteronlinearacceleratorandahigh-speedlithiumflowtarget,fortestingcandidatematerialsforfuturefusionreactors. AnactivityaimedatthesafetyassessmentoftheIFMIFplantasawholehasbeencarriedoutapplyingtheprobabilisticriskassessment(PRA)approachtoidentifyandquantifyintermsofexpectedfrequencies,thedominantaccidentsequencesrelatedtotheplantoperation,anddefinethereferenceaccidentscenariostobefurtheranalyzedthroughdeterministictransientanalysis,inordertoverifythefulfilmentofthesafetycriteria. Theaccidentsequenceshavebeenmodeledthroughtheeventtreetechnique,whichallowsidentifyingallpossiblecombinationsofsuccessorfailureofthesafetysystemsinrespondingtoaselectionofinitiatingevents.Theidentificationofaccidentinitiators,providedbythefailuremodeandeffectanalysis(FMEA)procedure,isfollowedbythesystemsanalysisbasedonfaulttreetechnique,fortheunavailabilityassessmentofthesafetysystems:finallytheaccidentsequencescenariosareassessedbyRISKSPECTRUMsoftware. ThestudyhasallowedforthedevelopmentofallaccidentsequencesresultingfromselectedinitiatorsrelativetoIFMIFplantandtheirgroupingwithinsequencefamilies,denotedasplantdamagestates,onaccountoftheplantresponseandexpectedconsequences.Thefrequencyassignedtoeachfamilysequenceisthesumofthecontributorsrelativetoallsequencesendingintothatparticularplantstate. TheoutcomeoftheanalysisshowsthatIFMIFplantisquitesafeandpresentsnosignificanthazardtotheenvironment:infactallthesequencesimplyingpotentialundesiredeffectsasradioactivereleasetotheoutside,showverylowfrequencies,wellbelowthelimitforcredibleaccident(1.0E−6/year).Inaddition,duetothenoveltyofthedesignandthelargespreadingassignedtothefailureparameterprobabilisticdistributions(datautilizedintheprobabilisticanalysisofthisoneofakindplantarelargelyofagenericnature),anuncertaintyanalysishasbeenperformedtoaddcredittothemodelquantificationandtoassessifthesequenceshavebeencorrectlyevaluatedontheprobabilitystandpoint.
