  • Abstract
    Given a diffeomorphism invariant theory and a bounded region R of spacetime specified in a diffeomorphism invariant way, we show that the usual variational principle within R may be modified so that it becomes invariant under both diffeomorphisms that do and do not preserve the boundaries of R.
