Abstract
General linear methods were originally introduced to provide a unified theory of consistency, stability and convergence for a large class of numerical methods for ordinary differential equations. We survey the use of this formulation and discuss the meaning of order of accuracy for these methods. In the search for new practical algorithms, we consider the special case of “DIMSIM” methods.
