Abstract
Today data retrieval is not only restricted to text, but has taken the form of sound and images. Multimedia data is defined as data in the form of text, sound and images. Manipulating and accessing such type of data requires an extensive approach for building a database system. A number of systems have been developed which integrate graphical representation with a DBMS to broaden the bandwidth of information transfer between the computer and the user. The objectoriented approach to multimedia databases adds flexibility for specialized applications in a multimedia environment. On the other hand, management of such a type of data in terms of storage and distribution is also a major task. This paper examines the basic concept of data manipulation in the object-oriented paradigm and its end-user outlook. Furthermore, consideration has been given to the storage requirements and the distribution of multimedia data.
