Abstract
This paperdealswithopenshopsundermakespanminimization.Encodingschemeplaysapivotalrole
in thesuccessofanyalgorithmtosolveaschedulingproblem.Althoughthepermutationlisthasmany
advantages (suchashighadaptabilitytoanyoperators,conceptualsimplicityandeaseofimplementa-
tion), itsuffersfromanotoriousinherentdrawback,calledredundancy.Thisseriousdrawbackhasmade
many researchersconcludethatpermutationlistisineffectiveforopenshopscheduling.Therefore,they
have turnedtowardtheutilizationofrankmatrixencodingschemetoovercomethisshortcomingat
the expenseoflosingotheradvantagesofpermutationlist.Inthispaper,wefirstpinpointtheoriginof
redundancy inthepermutationlist.Wethenanalyzecircumstancesinwhichtheredundancyoccursand
afterwards presentfourefficienttheoremstoavoidthiscriticaldisadvantage.Regardingthetheorems,
we understandthatredundancyisquiteidentifiableandalsocontrollable.Byintroducinganalternative
possibility torankmatricesofexcludingredundancy,thesolutionspaceofopenshopsissignificantly
reduced. Byreducingthesearchspace,theprobabilityoffindinganexcellentsolutioninreasonable

ness andefficiencyofourproposedalgorithmsonthreewell-knownbenchmarksandagainstsomeother

and proposedconstructiveheuristics.
