Abstract
Wepresentageneticalgorithm(GA)basedheuristicapproachforjobschedulinginvirtual
manufacturingcells(VMCs).InaVMC,machinesarededicatedtoapartasinaregularcell,but
machinesarenotphysicallyrelocatedinacontiguousarea.Cellconfigurationsarethereforetemporary,
and assignmentsaremadetooptimizetheschedulingobjectiveunderchangingdemandconditions.We
considerthecasewheretherearemultiplejobswithdifferentprocessingroutes.Therearemultiple
machinetypeswithseveralidenticalmachinesineachtypeandarelocatedindifferentlocationsinthe
shop floor.Schedulingobjectiveisweightedmakespanandtotaltravelingdistanceminimization.The
schedulingdecisionsarethe(i)assignmentofjobstothemachines,and(ii)thejobstarttimeateach
machine.ToevaluatetheeffectivenessoftheGAheuristicwecompareitwithamixedinteger
programming(MIP)solution.Thisisdoneonawiderangeofbenchmarkproblem.Computational
results showthatGAispromisinginfindinggoodsolutionsinveryshortertimesandcanbesubstituted
in theplaceofMIPmodel.
