Abstract
We presentadiversity-orientedhybridevolutionaryapproachforthegraphcoloringproblem.This
approachisbasedonbothgenerallyapplicablestrategiesandspecificallytailoredtechniques.Particular
attentionispaidtoensuringpopulationdiversitybycarefullycontrollingspacingamongindividuals.
Using adistancemeasurebetweenpotentialsolutions,thegeneralpopulationmanagementstrategy
decides whetheranoffspringshouldbeacceptedinthepopulation,whichindividualneedstobe
replacedandwhenmutationisapplied.Furthermore,weintroduceaspecialgrouping-basedmulti-
parent crossoveroperatorwhichreliesonseveralrelevantfeaturestoidentifymeaningfulbuilding
blocks foroffspringconstruction.Theproposedapproachcanbegenerallycharacterizedas‘‘well-
informed’’,inthesensethatthedesignofeachcomponentisbasedonthemostpertinentinformation
which isidentifiedbybothexperimentalobservationandcarefulanalysisofthegivenproblem.The
resultingalgorithmprovestobehighlycompetitivewhenitisappliedonthewholesetoftheDIMACS
benchmarkgraphs.
