Abstract
In thispaperweapplythekernelsearchframeworktothesolutionofthestronglyNP-hardmulti-
dimensionalknapsackproblem(MKP).Kernelsearchisaheuristicframeworkbasedonthe
identificationofarestrictedsetofpromisingitems(kernel) andontheexactsolutionofILP
sub-problems.Initially,thecontinuousrelaxationoftheMKP,solvedonthecompletesetofavailable
items, isusedtoidentifytheinitialkernel.Then,asequenceofILPsub-problemsaresolved,whereeach
sub-problemisrestrictedtothepresentkernelandtoasubsetofotheritems.EachILPsub-problem
may findbettersolutionswithrespecttothepreviousoneandidentifyfurtheritemstoinsertintothe
kernel.Thekernelsearchwasinitiallyproposedtosolveacomplexportfoliooptimizationproblem.In
this paperweshowthatthemethodhasgeneralkeyfeaturesthatmakeitappropriatetosolveother
combinatorialproblemsusingbinaryvariablestomodelthedecisionstoselectornotitems.Weadapt
the kernelsearchtothesolutionofMKPandshowthatthemethodisveryeffectiveandefficientwith
respecttoknownproblem-specificapproaches.Moreover,thebestknownvaluesofsomeMKP
benchmarkproblemsfromtheMIPLIBlibraryhavebeenimproved.
