Abstract
Weshowthemassivereductionachievable,inbothemissionsandclimatechangeimpact,fromenhancednuclearenergyuseontheforecastsoffutureworldenergyuseanditsassociatedenvironmentalimpacts.ArangeencompassingthemajorscenariosfortheWorldʹsenergydemandhavebeenanalyzedusingthelatestversionoftheclimate-modelingMAGICC/SCENGENsoftware(Version4.1).Wehaveupdatedandpredictedtheimpactsof80%substitutionwithCO2-freesources(likelypredominantlynuclear)forcoal-firedelectricity(by2030)andfortransportationfuel(by2040).Fortransportation,hydrogenproducedbyCO2-freesourceswouldreplacegasolineanddieselfuels.Inthispaper,tobrackettherangeoffutures,wesimplyfocusontwoscenariosfromtheIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChangeʹs(IPCC),one(A1FI)thatisenergy-profligateandone(B2)thatisenergy-conserving.
