  • Abstract
    Regardingsafetyimprovementsforexistingnuclearpowerplants,theTMI-2accidentisinterestingbecauseofthepresentcommercialdominanceoflightwaterreactors(LWR).Thisaccidentdemonstratedthatthenuclearsafetyphilosophyevolvedovertheyearshastocoveraccidentsequencesinvolvingmassivecoremeltprogressioninordertodevelopreliablemitigationstrategiesforboth,existingandadvancedreactors.AlthoughtheTMI-2corewasreflooded,theresultsalsoappearapplicabletothegeneralmeltprogressionphenomenologyofmostunrecovered(unreflooded)blockedcoreaccidentscenarios.Nevertheless,alargerangeintheinitialconditionsofcoremeltprogressionprovidessignificantuncertaintiesinassessingtheintegrityofthelowerhead,thecontainmentinseverereactoraccidents,andtheconsequencesofrecoveryactionsinaccidentmanagement,aswellascorerefloodinginparticular.Theprobabilityofsuccessofrefloodingasanaccidentmanagementstrategy–in-vesselrefloodingtoterminatetheaccidentandex-vesselfloodingtopreventreactorvesselmelt-through–hastobeassessedanddiscussedindetail.
