Abstract
Atwo-phaseMHDenergyconversionunitisproposedtoaliquidmetalcooledfastreactor.UsingsupercriticalCO2astheworkingfluidinthegascyclewithoutconsideringfrictionandheatlosses,theoptimizedcyclesefficiencyisobtained,whichisabout5%higherthanthatofthegasturbineBraytoncyclewiththesameregenerator/compressorconfigurations.BasedonasimpleMHDpoweranalysisandthetwo-phasehomogeneousflowmodel,theimportantsystemoperationalconditionswereestimated.Theresultssuggestthataliquidleadpumpofatleast20%oftheMHDpoweroutputisneededinordertoconvertthe400MWreactorheatintoelectricityatthespecifiedthermalefficiency,unlessamixturefoamflowofvoidfractiongreaterthan80%isachievableatveryhighmixturevelocity.
