Abstract
DistinctElementMethod(DEM)techniquesarecommonlyusedinthesimulationofgeotechnicalproblems.Thesetechniquessimulateasystemofparticlesbyexplicitlymodellingtheparticlesandtheinteractionbetweentheseparticles.
AnewapplicationofthesetechniquesisthesimulationofthemotionoffuelelementsandtheinteractionofthefuelelementsandthereflectorstructuresinaPebbleBedReactor(PBR).
ThePebbleBedModularReactor(PBMR)isaHighTemperatureGasCooledReactorthatisbeingdesigned(andsoontobeconstructed)inSouthAfrica.Thisreactormakesuseofasolidcentrereflector.Itisimportanttoillustratetheeffectofthepebblebedontheloadingofthisreflectortoshowthatthereflectorwillbeabletoperformitsrequiredfunctionswithsufficientreliability.
ThispaperconcernstheapplicationofaDEMtechniquetotheassessmentoftheloadsthatareexperiencedbythecentrereflectorofthe400MWth(thermal)PBMRcoreaswellastheassessmentofthereliabilityofthecentrereflectorwhensubjecttothisloading
