Abstract
Aseriesofquenchtestsonhollowcylindricalspecimensmadeofthemachinableceramic,Pyrophyllite,hasbeenperformed.Thespecimensconsistentlyfracturedwithtwodiametricallyoppositelongitudinalcracks.Finiteelementanalysisindicatesthattheprimarycrackoccurredatthestagewhenthestrainenergyofthecylinderreacheditsmaximumduringthethermaltransientprocess,whilethesecondarycrackwascausedbystresswavesgeneratedfollowingtheprimarycrack.Thisissupportedbyexperimentalobservationofthetimeoffractureandthecrackmorphology.Theworkreportedherehelpstoshedlightonthefracturecriterionforbrittlecylindricalcomponentsundertransientthermalanddynamicloadings.
