Abstract
Duringafuelelementfailureinaliquidmetalcooledfastbreederreactor,thefissionproductsoriginatingfromthefailedpinsmixintothesodiumpool.Delayedneutrondetectorsareprovidedinthesodiumpooltodetectsuchfailuresbywayofdetectionofdelayedneutronsemittedbydelayedneutronprecursorspresentinthefissionproducts.Thetransientevolutionofprecursorconcentrationisgovernedbythesodiumflowdistributioninthepool.Transientthermalhydraulicanalysisofprecursorconcentrationevolutioninthehotpoolofa500MWefastreactorhasbeencarriedoutusingthecomputationalfluiddynamicscodePHOENICStoestimatethetimeatwhichthefailuresofvariousfuelsubassemblyaredetected.Standardk–ɛturbulencemodelisusedtotakecareofturbulenceinconjunctionwiththeprecursorconcentrationequation.IthasbeenfoundthatinordertoeffectivelydetectthefailureofallfuelSAinthecore,aminimumofeightdetectorsareessentialtobeprovidedinthehotpool.
