Abstract
A nutrient budget is formed for what appears to be the strongly eutrophicated, phosphorus-limited Gulf of Riga. It is connected to the eutrophicated but mainly nitrogen-limited, brackish Baltic Sea. The budget is based on field measurements during 1989. The major nutrient input comes from the rivers. The Gulf seems to act as a large internal sink for inorganic nitrogen (>75%) and phosphate ( 45%). However, almost no total phosphorus is deposited in the Gulf, hence the missing phosphate is probably exported as particulate matter to the Baltic proper, mainly during winter time.
